The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that only 4,756 candidates scored 320 and above in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This represents just 0.24% of the 1,955,069 candidates who sat for the exam.
JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede announced the results during a press conference, providing a detailed breakdown of candidates’ performance. While 983,187 candidates (50.29%) scored between 160 and 199, only 12,414 candidates (0.63%) managed to score 300 and above.
The results highlight ongoing concerns about students’ preparedness and the quality of secondary education in Nigeria.
How do these results compare to previous UTME outcomes?
The 2025 UTME results continue the fluctuating trend seen over the past decade. While 21.5% of candidates scored 200 and above, this is a notable improvement from 2021’s 12.48% pass rate but a significant drop from 2016’s 35.76% pass rate.
Over 1.5 million candidates scored below 200, raising concerns about students’ preparedness and the quality of secondary education. Factors such as exam difficulty, preparation quality, and system glitches have been cited as reasons for poor performance.
